I dreamed of owning a yarn shop when I was young. I think this is a common fantasy among knitters. As I knitted I thought about what my "Dream Yarn Shop" would look like, which yarns I would carry, creative display ideas, and the calm quiet atmosphere of my "Dream Yarn Shop". REALITY CHECK!!! As we celebrate our 10th anniversary in August, 2014, I'm reflecting on what it really is to own a yarn shop. I remember saying just a few months into it, " I don't think this is about selling yarn. It's so much more!" And is it ever! A typical day at The Nest is not a typical day. Along with selling yarn I have assisted customers in buying and selling real estate, finding dogs, providing directions to destinations around the state of WV, listening to unbelievable pain and joy, and connecting and referring customers to each other for various reasons. The Nest is not so much a yarn shop as a community. Some members are just passing through and some have been around for ten years now. There's an energy here that is totally beyond me and not under my control. The Nest is just a conduit for what needs to be done that day. If a newbie knitter comes in for assistance and I'm otherwise occupied, my regular customers will wait on, encourage, and help with an enthusiasm that always blows me away! And it's always so exciting to see the sparkle in a knitter's eyes when she completes her first piece ... or completes a long or challenging project.... or sees her childhood friend and paperboy... or makes a new friend!
